The Porch: Chapter IV - A Piece by Ellis Millsaps

4/9/18

*Ed. Note: The Porch, Da's ongoing serial novella, is starting to become kind of a thing. Folks seem to really be enjoying it. Please do make sure to read the first three chapters before reading Pt. 4. As always, thanks so much for reading. Your Pal - MBM

The Porch: Chapter IV

“Why don’t we write a song?” Bob asks. “I’ll start.”
“Ah, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free.”

There’s a dumbfounded silence. Finally Bruce says, “You could have set the bar a little lower, you know.”
“OK, I’ll give it a shot. How about ‘Barefoot girl sitting on the hood of a Dodge drinking warm beer in the soft summer rain.’”

There’s a murmur of approval all around. I’m starting to seriously worry about my turn when Elvis says, “I don’t write no songs, except for that ‘Love Me Tender’ which I admit is a sugary piece of crap, but the Colonel made me do it. Same way he made me join the Army and make all those bad movies.”
This time there’s an embarrassed silence all around. We’re looking at our shoes and picking lint off our shirts.
Then Bruce, who along with Cohen seems to have assumed a leadership role says, “Yeah, but you sing really good.”
“That’s right Yankee songster, I’m a hunka, hunka burning love.”
“You know I wrote a song for you, Elvis. I’d already mailed it when you died on the crapper.”
“Yeah, what was the song?”
“‘Fire.’”
“How does it go?”
Bruce obliges by singing a verse.
"Man, that’s a great song. You wrote that for me? I wish you’d gotten it to me sooner. I could’a made you famous. So, you boys are all songwriters?”
“More or less.”
“It seems Mr. Presley doesn’t know anything that’s happened since that fateful day in 1977,” observes Mr. Cohen.
“What year is it now? Elvis asks.
I tell him it’s 2018.
“And Jesus ain’t come back yet?”
“Well, if he has, he hasn’t bothered to tell anybody.”
“Man, I’ve missed a lot. How’s Lisa Marie doing?”
“Pretty woman. Of course, she’s been married four times, I think.”
“Yeah, who to?”
“Well, there’s a couple I’ve never heard of. Then, there’s Nicolas Cage, an actor who does a badass imitation of you, by the way, and there’s Michael Jackson.”
“You mean  she married that little boy from the Jackson Five?”
“Yep.”
“Wait a minute, wasn’t he colored? Is that legal?”
“To answer your second question first. Yes, it’s legal. And you’re right, he was, as you say ‘colored,’ but by the time he married your daughter he was white as our friend here, the thin white duke.”

Elvis looks befuddled.
“Should we tell him about gay marriage?”
“What’s that?”
We tell him.
“You gotta be kidding.”

So, readers, as you can see, almost anything can happen in this land of magical realism, and as you can also see I’m working on a Dickensian serial novella. I’d like to make this interactive; if you have any ideas about what might happen next, send them to Marshall, and I might incorporate them.

Da Millsaps - he's actually weirder than he looks
As for me, I’m thinking the porch gang should go on a road trip. I’d like to know what Elvis thinks of Graceland fifty years later. If you’re curious about this, too, send a contribution to “Send The Porch to Graceland,” a GoFundMe that Marshall will set up (*ed. note: as some of you may know, I've been toying w/ the idea of setting up a gofundme for minute now - this will motivate me to do so. Keep an eye out. And God help look after us when we set off to Memphis...). If we don’t raise enough for the trip (Marshall needs to come, too. These guys could need a lot of chaperoning.), your money will be refunded and maybe we’ll take the porch to Shady Dale.

Ellis was an attorney by trade (now recovering) but has worn many hats over the years: father, bus boy, stand-up comedian, novelist, wiffle ball player, rock'n'roll band manager, and at one time wrote a popular and funny column for The Covington News. A Fannin Co. mountain boy originally, Mr. Millsaps now stays at the mill village of Porterdale by way of 20 years in Mansfield. Usually funny and at times irreverent and subversive, he leans left in his political philosophy but can always be counted on for a pretty darn good write-up. The Chronicles are proud to have him involved. You can read his past works at TPC by visiting his Contributing Writer page

Sunday Edition
8 April '18

And a good Sunday morning to everybody. Hope all is lovely out there. And how about this weather? You know we're always gonna have at least that one cold snap after Easter. I think the old folks called that blackberry winter. A lot going on today; let's dig right in.

This Sunday Edition brought to you by...

Murder & Mayhem in Walton Co.

From the Walton Co. Sheriff
The Walton County Sheriff’s Office has arrested the following individuals in connection with the body located earlier today on Walker Bennet Road:
Roger Gene Watters - 44 - tampering with evidence
Kolbie Hadden Watters- 21 - felony murder, aggravated assault
Jonathan Britt Lester - 21 - felony murder, aggravated assault

A missing person's case has now turned into an alleged murder investigation over in Walton Co. It has now been confirmed that the victim is one, Chase Loffler, whose body was found at a property in Loganville in which Lester supposedly lived. Not much in the way of details as the investigation is ongoing but the general consensus seems to be that hard drugs were most likely involved with some wondering if all of this is connected to the ongoing drug investigation in Morgan Co. that TPC has been investigating.

Mugshot of a previous charge against K. Watters

Roger Watters, father of Kolbie & former owner of Sycamore St. Grill in Social Circle, was arrested for allegedly "tampering with evidence." No word yet as to what exactly that evidence was. Some may remember Watters' arrest when he got shot at the grill back in 2016. TPC Editor MB McCart was made aware at the time by a family member of the person who shot Watters that the bar & grill owner was the instigator of that incident & that was later confirmed by law enforcement.

Lester was arrested in North Carolina

A lot of moving parts to this sordid story, but let's not forget the tragedy of a young man having gone to his grave far too soon. TPC will be keeping up with this situation.

NCRC Update

At Tuesday's Newton Co. BOC meeting, the anticipated total reset of the Newton Co. Rec Commission did not quite fully happen. Flemmie Pitts, longtime serving member, was reappointed to that board. Per an inside, anonymous source, Pitts' reappointment on that board (after it'd been announced that no previously existing members would be included) was part of a compromise to get at least one more member who wasn't a supposed "Establishment" person, but that a 3-vote consensus that'd been previously created apparently evaporated the night of the meeting into only two votes and the motion was carried.

Also of note is that the verbiage used in the resolution to reestablish the NCRC attempts to change the charter of this commission & makes the city of Covington representative on the board subject to approval of the BOC Chair. Several have said that this is illegal and in violation of the charter, but apparently Newton Co. is just shooting from the hip on a lot of things these days, so who knows? Regardless, the city does provide two employees to the Rec Department, including the interim director. Additionally, the city owns City Pond, so...there's a lot there.

But with a budget that pushes $2 million, things need to be handled correctly & the NCRC needs to be run efficiently moving forward. We'll keep an eye on it...

The Masters

" /s - Hey, I'm Patrick, I like cheating on the golf course & stealing stuff from my teammates. Plus, I'm a Choad & I like Notre Dame. /s

A tradition unlike any other, this year's edition has some interesting dynamics. First off, we may have finally found golf's first true villain in years. Patrick Reed, purported cheater & thief, has seized control of this thing & has a 3-stroke lead heading into Sunday's final round. This guy just looks like an as$hole, and apparently everybody hates him. GO DAWGS!

So...go Rory, I guess? I'd have to pull for ND Boy over Fowler, though.

And how about that Masters' Pimento Cheese sandwich! And they only charge a buck fifty for those bad boys. How 'bout the recipe?

Masters-style Pimento Cheese
Ingredients
  • 3 lbs shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 lbs of softened cream cheese
  • 1 1/2 cups of Dukes mayonnaise
  • 12 ounces of diced pimentos (jar) or roasted red peppers
  • 1 tsp of white pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbl of granulated onion
  • 1 tbl of granulated garlic
  • A couple shakes of hot sauce
  • Dice red peppers or pour jarred pimentos along with juice into a mixing bowl
Directions
  • Combine cream cheese, peppers with juice, mayo, hot sauce and spices. Fold dressing into cold shredded cheddar cheese. Ready to serve, either alone with crackers or as a sandwich.

Odds & Ends

- Eatonton, GA is turning it up to 11! They've added a lot of great dining over in Putnam Co. & there's a lot of arts & culture going on. They've also raised the bar when it comes to entertainment & music. Yacht Rock coming in June! I plan on being there...

- Covington to decide on its representative on the NCRC on April 11th at a work session.

- Democratic Primary for Governor: The Battle of the Two Staceys - Abrams vs. Evans. The smart money is on Abrams, but I wouldn't totally discount Evans. Regardless, the smart money is also on either of them most likely losing the general election in November. But, if the "Blue Tsunami" does truly come to pass, then nothing is off the table. Look for an expansive piece this week here at TPC.

Well alright, friends, that'll do it for this edition. Be on the lookout tonight for the 4th installment of Ellis Millsaps' "The Porch." And thanks so much for all of this positive feedback on both "Kayla's Corner" & the return of "Marshall's Music Minute." Be on the lookout for both of those on a weekly basis.

Hope everyone has a great week.

Your Pal,

MB McCart

Marshall's Music Minute: Huge Friday of Music in the GA Piedmont; Hannah Thomas, CJ&S & Others Playing

Marshall's Music Minute
Weekend of April 6th & 7th

Howdy music lovers & we sure hope all is lovely out there. As promised, the Minute is back in action, and not a moment too soon! It's a big weekend of music lined up here in our neck of the woods, and as you may have gathered by the title, it's fairly Friday heavy. So much talent, but only so much time. What's a music enthusiast to do? Well, just hit all of 'em! Why the hell not?

Featured Show

Hannah Thomas
Live at 3rd Base Bar & Grill. Conyers. Friday the 6th. 9PM

The one & only Hannah Thomas, a supreme talent,  has played with the likes of The Indigo Girls, Melissa Etheridge & Pat Benatar. She's also recorded with some A-list musicians & has toured all over the country. A full-time musician, she's back in the C-town Groove & it's very exciting. As many of you know, I've been a big fan of hers ever since I first met her over 10 years ago when she was just getting started. Watching her career blossom has been awesome. I've interviewed her a few times over the years for both radio & print, and it's always such a joy to talk with her. If you haven't seen her in action - you NEED to. With a sound that's equal parts Rock, Country & Americana, her voice is amazing & her songwriting is even better. This is a MUST SEE show, folks.

Chris, Jon & Scott
Live at Amici. Friday, April 6th. 7PM

Regardless of whether you're going to try to make it to either Hannah's gig or the other big one on Friday, due to those both being a bit later in the evening, there's not an excuse to not swing by The Amici's, grab a bite of killer Italian grub & check out C-town's favorite live group - CS&J.

These guys are another I've written about numerous times & they are Just. Too. Damn. Good! Scott is the best bass player in the home county; Jon is as good a guitar player as you'll likely see & then there's our main man Christon. Truly just on another plane - he's magnificent! An amazing voice & an out-of-this-world stage presence that'll take one about 200,000 feet above sea level. If you've been under a rock & somehow haven't seen these righteous dudes, you need to change that.

Robin Dixon & the Midnight Moon Band
Live at Five O'Clock Somewhere. Covington, GA. Friday, April 6th. 9:30PM

Robin Dixon is a terrific singer & songwriter that I've written about a few times over the last couple of years. With her topnotch group, she is one of the favorites of the 5 O'Clock folks. Her powerful voice & strong stage presence will really impress & leave you wanting more. From their FB page:

We are a band that can communicate real, raw emotion, & energy with our crowd while rockin' a party like no other band!! Our music ranges from Top-40 Country Hits to Honky Tonk Classics, to Southern Rock, to some 90's Rock, & our own originals as well.

This should be a helluva show. I'm going to do my best to get by a least for a bit.

And more live music on Saturday night at both Five O'Clock & The Listening Room.

Enjoy the tunage, friends, and we'll see you right back here next week.

Best,

MBM

An Analysis of the Appeal of the Termination of the Former NCRC Director: A Seemingly Clear Vindication of McKelvey, Rhodes, et al

Your Source for the REAL Story

[Covington, GA, USA * 4/3/18] -

The Piedmont Chronicles, after having perused the full "Final Decision" of the Appeal of Termination between Appellant Anthony Avery & Appellee/Employer NEWTON COUNTY REC. COMMISSION (NCRC), truly believes that this serves as a seemingly clear vindication of possibly the entire former NCRC board, or, at a minimum, Messrs. Josh McKelvey & Steven Rhodes.

As previously reported, TPC has waded through upwards of 900 pages of documents, some having been the result of ORRs filed by - and financially responsible to - The Chronicles pertaining to & relating to this entire affair from its inception (Need some background? Go back to late November of this publication & read from there), starting with the NCRC investigative committee & its findings in November of 2017.

As evidenced in those documents, and later upheld by the Newton Co. review & now with this appeal, the reasons for termination FOR CAUSE seem to be legitimate due to the purported violations in said documents. And Per Hearing Officer E. Logan Butler, there was a "preponderance of the evidence" that the termination was based on violations of the pertinent rules & regulations of the former director pertaining to & involving several things including, but not limited to, the following:

From the Appeal Hearing's "Findings":

- an inference that the former director did not comply with sound management & financial procedures & policies, particularly as it related to write-offs, including write-offs for family members.
- evidence of insubordination

- improper utilization of mileage reimbursements

          - conflict of interest issues

          - and others

The findings also mentioned  case law that TPC had already researched that is apropos to the situation in the case of Norris v. Henry Co., 255 GA. App. 719 (2002), which clearly states "the employer's failure to provide [a due process pre-termination hearing] is not a constitutional violation under the due process clause if the employer provides a later procedural remedy (emphasis added). Or, if you will, that an oversight, or a mistake, can be made right, truly & legally.

I had a discussion, maybe a month or so ago, with an unlikely source. A certain Atty-at-Law. Though not specifically stated, I treated it as off the record. It was an illuminating & at times very enjoyable conversation that ranged from the balancing of equities, seeking Justice "though the Heavens may fall," and doing the right things & always striving to do things right.

One thing that I mentioned was a keen fear of the dangers of preconceived notions & group-think, us-vs-them-oriented, base & illogical identity politics.

People's lives are involved here.

Josh McKelvey, Steven Rhodes & others - unpaid volunteers- have been targeted, tarnished, and - in my opinion - bullied with this thing. I'd think they'd be entitled to remedy & satisfaction.

But per some very broad brush strokes that were printed in both of the traditional media outlets of Newton Co - all those people - all - according to the counsel of record, are personally responsible for being guilty of purported "racism," including Rhodes, an African-American.

This'll be the last time I post about this story for the time being. I'm still very much investigating it. The file continues to thicken up. But, to quote a wise woman from the home county, I'll be keeping my powder dry for the moment.

Very Truly Yours,

Marshall B. McCart

Okay for now, friends. GO DAWGS & GATA!

Sunday Check-in: GA GOP Gubernatorial Debate Analysis

Your Source for the REAL Story

1 April 2018

Last night in Flowery Branch, GA, all seven of the qualified candidates for the GOP Primary for Governor of the Great State of Georgia met up to debate the issues in front of a packed & enthusiastic crowd in an event that was put on by the 9th Congressional District Republican Party.

While a common theme from most of the candidates was the importance of religious freedom, it didn't take long for several of the candidates to start calling out presumed front runner, Lt. Governor Casey Cagle.

- LOCAL ADVERTISER -

There seemed to be a clear delineation of roles & personalities on the stage, almost as though it was a scripted event. Cagle - the even-keel front runner; Current SOS Brian Kemp - the folksy, populist "man of the people"; Hunter Hill - the tough, pragmatic military-man conservative; Clay Tippins - the outside-the-box & more philosophical, libertarian-leaning political thinker; and Michael Williams - the Trumpian firebrand.

Cagle with the thousand yard stare

A straw poll that was done basically confirms what several politicos have said & is not unlike what this publication wrote about last week.

Straw Poll results from the GA GOP Governor's Debate

The basic breakdown: Cagle - 41%; Kemp - 22%; Tippins - 15%; Hill - 12%; Williams - 9%.

There certainly seems to be a clear pecking order here. It seems as if it's Cagle's race to lose, though he's almost guaranteed to be facing a run-off challenger. But who will that candidate be? The smart money would seem to be on Kemp, though a poll that came out a couple of weeks ago had Hunter Hill in the number two spot. As previously mentioned, Hill does have a strong campaign structure, but then again - so does Kemp. And now we see that dark horse Clay Tippins is not looking like such an outside shot anymore. Make no mistake here, friends, his 15% showing is probably the biggest win any of the the candidates got last night.

And now I'm going to tie in some analysis I did this past week. How do the five legitimate gubernatorial candidates stack up in terms of their Facebook preference?

  1. Casey Cagle: approx. 169,000 likes
  2. Hunter Hill: approx. 66,000 likes
  3. Brian Kemp: approx. 47,000 likes
  4. Michael Williams: approx. 22,000 likes
  5. Clay Tippins: approx. 7,000 likes

Just like the old saying in politics about yard signs, it is true that Facebook likes don't necessarily equate to votes, but just like with yard signs - they sure as hell don't hurt, either!

Regardless, these last 52 days of the campaign promise to be exciting. Stay tuned for more on this race in the weeks to follow.

As always, thanks for reading.

Your Pal,

MB McCart
